Retainers

  • Unless Dr. Ferreira instructs otherwise, wear your retainers full time.
  • Bring your retainers to each appointment.
  • Retainers can easily break. Please handle them with care. If you break or lose your retainers, contact our office immediately.
  • Initially, you may have trouble speaking. Practice speaking, reading or singing out loud. This will help you get used to them faster.
  • When eating remove your retainers and always place them in their case. Many appliances are misplaced in school lunch rooms or restaurants. Remove them when swimming.
  • Using a toothbrush and toothpaste, thoroughly clean your retainers once a day. This will remove plaque and eliminate odors. Use warm water. You can also place your retainers in Efferdent or other orthodontic appliance cleaners. However, this does not take the place of brushing.
  • If your retainers are not in your mouth, they should always be in their case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Keep your retainers away from pockets, the washing machine, hot water, hot car dashboards and restaurant napkins.
  • For questions or concerns, or if your retainers need adjusting, please call us. Do not attempt to adjust them yourself.
